Peace, Be Still

In addition to sound baths, meditation has helped me to deal with my anxiety. To meditate is to think deeply or contemplate on something in silence or with minimal distraction. A regular meditation practice can help to relieve anxiety and increase your awareness.

When I was in yoga teacher training, we learned a particular order that led up to meditation. Generally, we would complete our asanas (postures) followed by pranayama (breath control) to help clear the physical and mental energy for meditation.

You do not have to do a physical practice to prepare for meditation. Like with prayer, some people simply wake up and immediately meditate. The key is to be consistent with your practice.

If you are new to meditation, set a calming alert on your alarm clock for five to 10 minutes and try the following:

  1. Find a comfortable seat. Whether you are sitting on the floor, on a chair or pillow, choose a location where you can sit for the entirety of your practice.

  2. Focus on your breath. Inhale fully and exhale completely.

  3. Notice your thoughts. If your mind begins to wander, return to focusing on the breath until you’re ready to return to your thoughts.
